Invasive Pests: Threats to Forests & Native Plants

Dan Stark, Assistant Professor of Practice for the OSU Forestry & Natural Resources Extension, will explore current and potential threats to Oregon forests, particularly native trees and plants in order to better understand the spread, impacts, and consequences of invasive species. As a case study, we will explore Sudden Oak Death (SOD), caused by Phytophthors ramorumresponsible for killing hundreds of thousands of tan oak in Curry County, Oregon and throughout its range in California. It has also killed rhododendrons locally in Lincoln City.

Who benefits when we make our gardens accessible? Everyone! Explore approaches to using Universal Design and adaptive gardening practices to expand access to the joy of gardening. We will explore a broad spectrum of garden design options and demonstrate an array of helpful tools with guidance from a local occupational therapist.

Learn from an OSU Certified Master Gardener how to identify these invasives, where to report them, and how to effectively control them. We will also discuss weed control and demonstrate the use of tools specifically designed for removal.
