The MG Program

The Oregon State University Extension Service Master Gardener™ program is a vibrant community of passionate volunteers dedicated to making a positive impact across Oregon. Through their commitment to sustainable gardening practices and science-based education,

Master Gardener Volunteers empower individuals and communities to grow their own food, build community relationships, and foster a deeper connection to the natural world.

Master Gardener Volunteers generously give their time and expertise to educate, inspire and support their neighbors. Whether they're teaching gardening techniques, managing demonstration community gardens or providing expert advice at local events and Plant Clinics, Master Gardeners are building resilient, healthy communities while nurturing a love for lifelong learning.

Join us as a Lincoln County Master Gardener.  You'll become a better gardener and have fun doing so.
How It Works
Training to become a Master Gardener volunteer is offered annually. The first year requires a time
commitment of 85 hours. Training consists of 40 educational hours through classes, workshops and discussion sessions.
After completing the 40 hours of classes, trainees have a variety of options to complete 45 volunteer hours between April and October 31.
  • Volunteering in Master Gardener Demonstration Gardens
  • Assisting with Plant Clinics to answer community gardening questions
  • Creating outreach materials
  • Website, Blogs and Publicity
  • Working with the local Association's various committees
  • Information Tables in the Community
After the initial training year, Master Gardener volunteers re-certify yearly by fulfilling 20 hours of volunteer work and 10 hours of continuing education.
Make A Difference
Being a Master Gardener volunteer doesn’t mean you’ve mastered gardening. It means you have a lifelong love of learning—because there’s always something new to learn about gardening. Master Gardener volunteers are out in the community, serving as a steady presence, especially during the gardening season. Volunteers also serve by staffing the many questions that come into Extension via email, phone, and in person.
